HIGH POINT — The Carl Chavis Memorial YMCA will help students get ready for school on Saturday at its Back to School Bash by giving away bookbags, food, clothes and haircuts.

High Point principals also will be available to meet and greet students.

“It’s going to be bigger and better than ever,” said Carlvena Foster, executive director of the Carl Chavis branch. “We have partnered with Grace Point Church, and also with UPS, so we will have well over 500 bookbags to give away. There will also be a free clothes giveaway, free food, free splashpad, a free gift card giveaway and free haircuts on site.”

Students are asked to register in advance for the 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. event, but can register on the day of the event at 2757 Granville St., Foster said.

“It’s going to be better for the families because we will have more things to give away, particularly gift cards that will allow them to buy some things that they really need in addition to bookbags and school supplies,” Foster said. “We have been able through these partnerships to increase the number of families that we will reach.”

The Back to School Bash usually supplies between 300-400 students, but Foster expects to be able to distribute nearly 700 bookbags on Saturday.

“Preregistration just ensures that we have one for everybody,” Foster said. “We don’t want anybody to be turned away without a bookbag.”

In addition to Grace Point Church and the UPS-High Point store, community partners include Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Eta Omicron Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and Beta Kappa Kappa chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
