POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction and daily supervision of the Personnel Director, Cabin Life Director, and Camp Director, the Head Counselor is responsible for all aspects of Cabin Life, working with both staff and campers.  The Head Counselor is part of the Leadership Staff and supervises the Senior Counselors, Junior Counselors and Counselors-in Training. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Adheres and comply with the YMCA of High Point Employee Manual, Policy & Procedures Manual, Code of Conduct and Camp Cheerio Staff Standards & Expectations.
  • Visits cabins on opening and closing days to monitor staff preparedness, interaction with parents and interaction/engagement with campers.
  • Organizes counselors for opening and closing ceremonies.
  • Remain knowledgeable and aware of campers with special needs, such as eating habits, dietary concerns, health issues, relational concerns, etc.
  • Visits cabins daily during cabin clean-up times to assist and monitor.
  • Visits cabins on a daily basis to check in with counselors, develop relationships with counselors, and assist in meeting their needs and addressing any concerns.
  • Observes cabin devotions on a regular basis.
  • Responsible for the welfare of campers and staff, providing solutions to problems and concerns.
  • Reviews camper confidential forms prior to the start of each session.
  • Informs Directors of any camper or staff issues regarding safety and conflicts.
  • Assists in camper activity sign-ups when available on opening days.
  • Recognizes and assists campers and/or staff struggling to adjust to the camp atmosphere and lifestyle, such as homesickness or health issues.
  • Assists in ensuring the morale of staff by monitoring staff relationships with co-counselors, peers and supervisors, as well as monitoring their rest, time off, and recreational activities available to them.
  • Communicates with parents of campers when needed.
  • Monitors campers and counselors throughout the day, being available to assist in areas of concern.
  • Provides feedback to counselors on their performance, both positive and needed corrections.
  • Communicates with Directors the performance of all staff in weekly meetings or as needed.
  • Evaluates the camp program and assists in setting objectives so staff can meet expectations of the camp program.
  • Assists in evaluating counselors formally in written and face to face format, providing a midway and final evaluation.
  • Supervises and checks the writing of all staff reports as they pertain to campers and programs (camper development forms, postcards home, etc.).
  • Provides feedback and discipline to counselors privately and efficiently for actions that cause a camper/staff’s health and/or safety to be at risk.
  • Monitors counselors by spending time in and with cabins, ensuring all counselors fulfill their duties as per the counselor job descriptions.
  • Serves as an active member of the Leadership Staff, assisting in a weekend camper supervision, evaluations, and participating as a leader in other areas of camp as determined by the Camp Director.  
  • Submits all required reports on time (camper development forms, lesson plans, etc.).
  • Administers basic first aid until qualified medical personnel arrive.
  • Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Conducts behavior at all times in a professional manner to reflect positively on the YMCA.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as requested by immediate supervisor to facilitate efficient and effective operation of the YMCA.

 

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Rising college junior or age equivalent.
  • Excellent human relation and problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to enforce appropriate safety regulations, emergency procedures and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Ability to perform routine first aid tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work with children outdoors, to relate to one’s peer group, and ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities. Hear noises and distress signals within the cabin and all camp areas. Sufficient stamina to perform job duties in extreme climates. Physical ability to operate emergency exits and perform emergency procedures.
