Over the past two years, COVID-19 has challenged our organization and our community in innumerable ways. To name just a few examples, children became displaced from their schools, parents struggled for safe child care, and individuals became isolated. The YMCA of High Point has been dedicated to supporting our community during this unprecedented time and as our youth and our community are on the road to recovery, our Y will continue to respond to the needs of our neighbors.

For over a year, our branches became a home away from home for children as we provided childcare for essential workers during the darkest days of the pandemic and we gave children a safe place for remote learning when their classrooms were closed.  While our branches were closed for indoor activities, our sports fields and parking lots became the site for yoga and fitness programs when people needed to build a healthier lifestyle for physical and mental health.  And when families were working and going to school under the same roof and were on the brink of loosing their way, Camp Cheerio expanded its family camp weekends and families found a silver lining to Covid through outdoor adventure in a safe environment.

Now, our YMCA is continuing to meet the greatest needs of the community.  Since the onset of the pandemic, over 200 teens in our Free Teen Membership Program have come to the Y for a combined 3000 visits to play basketball, get healthy in the fitness center, swim, hangout in the teen center or take part in an enrichment program.  We are seeing greater participation than ever in day and resident camp programs, swim lessons and youth sports.  Our licensed childcare program has a waiting list and parents feel safe allowing Y staff to care for their infants and toddlers as their set their path for a healthy lifestyle.

With greater participation, comes greater need.  More families are in need of financial scholarship as they recover from lost jobs or lost wages due to the pandemic.  And as we welcome more teens and youth into the Y, we understand the challenges the pandemic has caused socially, emotionally, physically and academically for children.

Your support of the Friends of the Y Campaign enables the Y to meet these needs with financial scholarships for programs, growth of the Free Teen Program and expanded programming for youth to meet the specific challenges caused by the pandemic with staff who are getting better training to respond to those needs.  Our ability to continue to meet the greatest needs of our community depends on you!
