Volunteerism and the YMCA
The YMCA is a volunteer driven organization. They are the backbone of
the Y in helping to fulfill its vision of building strong kids, strong,
families and strong communities. A YMCA volunteer is defined as anyone
who willingly gives time to help the YMCA accomplish its mission without
financial compensation. Types of volunteers include:
- Policy Volunteers help the Y in serving on YMCA boards and
committees and act as Trustees.
- Program Volunteers help the Y in delivering programs and services.
They are the coaches and mentors who work directly with Y members and
the community.
- Fundraising Volunteers help the Y in the leadership and legwork
that goes into successful fundraising campaigns and special events.
- Managerial Volunteers help the Y in acting as consultants,
lending special skills or talents in accounting, architecture, public
relations, and so on.
- Support Volunteers help the Y in the office, locker room, in
the facility, and on the grounds.
The
two largest examples of volunteers at work at the High Point YMCA are
mentors and coaches.
At the Hartley-Drive Family Branch coaches,
referees, and scorers for basketball, soccer and baseball are all volunteers.
These sport programs provide the opportunity for over 1,500 youth to participate
on a sports team.
A volunteer job gives each volunteer a sense of community and common
purpose, and helps the volunteer grow personally, professionally, or both.
It's a great way to make friends and should always be fun!
